Electric showers

Electric showers heat cold mains water on demand using an internal heating element. They're a good fit for homes with low water pressure or where running a hot water pipe to the bathroom isn't practical. They need a dedicated electrical circuit, properly sized for the shower's power rating, usually either 7.5kW, 8.5kW, 9.5kW or higher depending on your mains flow rate.

Power showers

Power showers boost the flow from your existing hot and cold supply using an integrated pump. They're suited to homes with a stored hot water cylinder rather than a combi boiler, and give a noticeably stronger flow than a standard mixer shower. They're not suitable for combi boiler systems, since pumping water through a combi boiler can damage it and isn't something we'd ever do.

What we check before recommending either option

A lot of period and older properties around Chester, Nantwich, and Frodsham have pipework that was never sized for modern shower demands, so we'll flag this before fitting anything rather than after. Upgrading the pipe run from the supply to the bathroom sometimes makes more difference to performance than the shower unit itself.

• Pipe sizing to the bathroom, since undersized pipework restricts performance regardless of which shower you choose

Installation and testing

Once we've agreed the right option, we fit the shower, complete all electrical and plumbing connections to current regulations, and run a full test covering flow rate, temperature stability, and safety cut-outs before considering the job finished.
