The most common challenge: waste pipe routing

En-suites are often added in spaces, like a corner of a bedroom or a converted cupboard, that sit some distance from the existing drainage stack. Getting waste water from the new toilet and shower or bath to the existing system, with an adequate fall throughout the route, is usually the trickiest part of an en-suite installation. We assess this early, since it sometimes influences where fixtures can practically be positioned within the new room.

When a macerator system is the right answer

If gravity drainage genuinely isn't achievable given the available floor depth and route to the existing system, a macerator unit can pump waste water to the connection point instead. This opens up en-suite positions that would otherwise be impossible, though it's a system with its own considerations around capacity and maintenance, which we'll talk through honestly before recommending it over alternative layouts.

En-suites are often fitted into a smaller footprint than a standard family bathroom, which means careful fixture selection and positioning to make the space work practically.
