Drains
French Drain Installation in Cheshire
A French drain is a trench filled with gravel containing a perforated pipe, designed to redirect surface and groundwater away from an area where it's causing waterlogging or pooling. They're commonly used to solve persistent wet patches in gardens, manage water running off driveways, or protect a building's foundations from water collecting against them.
When a French drain is the right solution
- Persistent waterlogging in a specific area of the garden, particularly after rain, that doesn't drain away naturally
- Water collecting against a building's foundation or wall, which can lead to damp problems over time if left unmanaged
- Driveways or paths where surface water consistently pools rather than running off
- Sloped gardens where water naturally collects at the lowest point and needs redirecting somewhere more useful
How we install one
We dig a trench along the route water needs to be redirected, line it with a permeable membrane to prevent silt clogging the system over time, lay the perforated pipe at the correct gradient to ensure water actually flows in the right direction, and backfill with gravel before finishing with topsoil or whatever surface finish suits the area, whether that's lawn, gravel, or paving.
Getting the gradient and outfall right
The whole system depends on water actually flowing somewhere useful once it enters the drain, whether that's a soakaway, an existing drainage system, or a lower point in the garden where pooling isn't a problem. We assess where water can sensibly be directed before digging anything, since a French drain that's installed without a proper outfall just moves the waterlogging problem to a different spot.
Combining with other drainage solutions
For more significant water management issues, a French drain sometimes works best alongside a soakaway or storm drain improvements, rather than as a standalone fix. We'll assess your specific garden or property and recommend what genuinely solves the problem rather than just one isolated solution.
