The plumbing requirements for a wet room differ from a standard bathroom, particularly around drainage, which needs careful planning to work correctly within a level floor design.
What makes wet room drainage different
In a standard shower, water drains through a tray with a built-in fall toward a central waste. In a wet room, the entire floor needs a very subtle gradient toward the drain, since there's no raised tray edge containing the water. Getting this fall right, often just a few millimetres across the whole floor, is critical for water to drain properly rather than pooling in parts of the room.
Linear drains versus point drains
Wet rooms commonly use either a linear drain, a long, narrow drainage channel typically positioned along one wall, or a traditional point drain positioned centrally. Linear drains often suit level access designs well, since they can be positioned to work with a simpler, single-direction floor fall rather than needing the floor to slope toward a central point from every direction.
Working alongside waterproofing
Wet rooms need full waterproofing, known as tanking, applied to the floor and walls before tiling. We coordinate closely with whoever's carrying out the waterproofing, since our drainage and pipework installation needs to happen at the right point in that process, and any pipe penetrations through the waterproof membrane need to be properly sealed to avoid compromising the whole system.
Level access considerations
Level access wet rooms, often chosen for accessibility reasons, need the floor structure assessed early in the project, since achieving a level threshold sometimes means lowering the floor level in the wet room area relative to the rest of the property, which is a structural consideration beyond just the plumbing itself.
