Gas Leak Detection and Repair in Cheshire
A gas leak is a genuine safety emergency, and acting correctly and quickly matters far more than waiting to be completely certain before doing anything. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, the immediate steps matter as much as the eventual repair.
What to do if you suspect a gas leak
- Don't use any electrical switches, including light switches, since a spark could ignite escaping gas
- Don't light any flames or smoke in the property
- Open windows and doors if you can do so safely, to ventilate the area
- Leave the property
- Call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999, and call us on 07498 291 822
These steps apply regardless of certainty
These steps apply whether you're fairly confident it's a genuine leak or just unsure, since the risk of acting on a false alarm is far lower than the risk of not acting on a real one.
How we detect gas leaks
Once it's safe to investigate, we use gas detection equipment to locate the source of a leak accurately, rather than guessing based on where the smell seems strongest, since gas can travel along pipe runs and through voids before becoming noticeable in a particular room. This includes checking appliance connections, pipework joints, and the supply pipe itself.
Common causes of gas leaks
- Worn or damaged seals at appliance connections
- Corroded gas pipework, particularly in older properties
- Damage to pipework from building work or accidental impact
- Poorly fitted connections from previous work that wasn't carried out correctly
Repairing the leak
Once located, we repair the specific point of failure, whether that's replacing a seal, repairing or replacing a section of pipe, or addressing an appliance connection issue. We then pressure test the system to confirm the repair has fully resolved the leak before considering the job complete.
Why this isn't something to delay
Gas leaks don't tend to improve on their own, and continuing to use appliances or ignore a suspected leak increases risk over time rather than reducing it. If you've smelled gas even briefly and aren't sure if it's ongoing, it's always worth getting checked rather than hoping it was nothing.
