Where macerators make sense

• Basement and cellar bathrooms, where the floor level sits below the main drainage system and gravity flow simply isn't possible
• En-suites added at a distance from existing drainage, where running a conventional waste pipe with adequate fall isn't achievable within the available floor depth
• Ground floor cloakrooms in properties where the drainage stack is on the opposite side of the building

Installation

We size the macerator correctly for the fixtures it's serving, whether that's just a toilet or a full bathroom suite including a shower and basin, since units vary in capacity. We then connect the macerator to the fixtures, run the discharge pipe to the nearest suitable connection point, which can often be a smaller diameter pipe than conventional waste pipework since it's pumped rather than relying on gravity, and test the system fully under normal operating conditions.

Common macerator faults we repair

• Unit not activating when the toilet is flushed, often an electrical or switch fault
• Blockages within the macerator itself, usually caused by inappropriate items being flushed that the unit can't process properly
• Noisy operation, which can indicate wear in the motor or impeller mechanism
• Discharge pipe blockage further along its route, which can prevent the macerator from clearing waste even when the unit itself is working

What shouldn't go through a macerator

Macerators are designed for toilet waste, toilet paper, and limited bathroom greywater, not for items like wipes, sanitary products, or excessive paper, which can jam the cutting mechanism or motor.
