What's involved

• Connecting to your existing mains water supply, usually via a tee connection on an internal pipe close to where the supply enters the property
• Running pipework from the connection point to the outside wall, choosing the most practical and least disruptive route through the property
• Fitting a proper outdoor-rated tap with a frost-resistant or self-draining design built specifically for external use
• Fitting an isolation valve so the supply can be shut off and drained for winter if needed without affecting the rest of the house
• Sealing the wall penetration properly to prevent water ingress around the pipe where it passes through the external wall

Why frost protection matters

Cheshire winters bring regular frost, and an outdoor tap without proper protection is one of the most common causes of a burst pipe call-out we get in January and February. Water left standing in an unprotected outdoor pipe expands as it freezes and can split the pipe or the tap body itself, leading to a leak that often isn't noticed until the thaw, by which point water has already caused damage. A self-draining tap, or an isolation valve fitted so the supply can be shut off and drained before winter, avoids this completely.
